Just a short note to say whoever is responsible for the introduction of Cane Toads to Australia should be lined up and shot. They are a major pest in Aussie these days and are responsible for the deaths of many animals

Since your on the topic of pests, I have a little black squirrel that has made a home in the small attic above one of my lofts. He can't get into the loft, so I don't bother with it, figured it just wants a dry place to stay.
Question is, should this be a concern for my birds, or just let the little fellow be?

Jeff.....Personal opinion, I'd get rid of him. Had a similar thing with red squirrels, starts off as a bachelor pad, then the girlfriend moves in with him. Then they start looking for nesting material. Pretty soon your running a condo for squirrels as well as a loft.

Jeff he will be a pain in the butt.
If he gets in the loft . when birds are out, he will eat eggs, young etc. Also will frollick on top and cause havoc .. Race day usually lol.
By the way a good way of sptopping squirrels is Moth balls when in appropiate places. I e. elves etc.

Jeff I've had a chipmunk going in my grains bin for about 3 or four years now. Red and grey squirrels doing the same. No problem in fact I think it's a good thing. Hawks like to make them lunch also. It could save a bird or two. Never did they go for anything other than the grain in the loft.

Bob---they will go for eggs, but in this part of the country, the squirrels go into semi-hibernation, and only come out of their stupor long enough to get a drink, some food--then go into a semi-stupor state for 2-3 weeks at a time. Perhaps that is why you never had any problems with them stealing eggs. I also wonder at their boldness if faced with a really agressive hen/cock sitting on the eggs? I would still clear them out, being rodents,no matter their personal hygiene, they can be carriers of possibly ?? who knows??
