CANADIAN SHIELD MARATHON CLASSIC
Fund Raiser Mini-Auction

The genetic roots of the modern day sport of racing pigeons were based on legendary performances from long distance races. During the formidable developmental years around the turn of the 20th century the strain makers of the hobby selected only long distance warriors that had repeatedly proven their mettle from races of 600, 700, 800 and even 1000 miles upon which to base their breeding programs. Right up to today, in 2006, the fanciers that have followed have reaped the benefits of the talent and stock sense of these pioneers. In recent times, the appeal of long distance racing has waned and these classic marathons have all but disappeared. Without these challenging races to select for only the best of the best, the entire racing pigeon gene pool is at risk. With this in mind, the Canadian Shield Marathon Classic was conceived and hatched. Tom Brouwer, Rick Jadowski and others proved that the quality can still be found.

The 1st annual overall Classic winner, out dueling 41 lofts and 176 birds, was Tom Brouwer, North Wings Club. His hen 01-CU-OAK-1230 covered 1199 km at a speed of 1055 m/m. Right behind and winning 1st section 801 – 850 miles (1302 km) and second and third overall was Rick Jadowski of the Centennial Homing Club of Ottawa with two hens clocked less than 8 minutes apart, 03-CU-OTT-3346 and 02-CU-OTT-2245, flying 981 m/m and 974 m/m respectively.

In a recent study using the European coefficient rating system, Tom Brouwer’s long distance race performance was found to be the second best in all Canada over the past ten years. In 2006 he won all three long distance races in the Up North Combine from 911 km, 1199 km and 869 km. The birds that scored 7th and 8th from Nakina arrived home 1st and 2nd from Longlac. From Nakina they were three seconds apart and from Longlac they were one second apart. During that same time period, Rick Jadowski has amassed an unequalled record in Canada’s largest race, the Upper Canada National with top finishes that include 26th (1986), 14th (1988), 1st (1993), 94th (1999), 3rd (2000), 62nd (2003), 2nd (2004), and 1st (2006) against 2500 to 4500 birds. His 2nd and 3rd overall winning Pickle Lake hens were 2nd and 4th 600 miles 12 days after their Pickle Lake race.

Is it a coincidence that these two lofts were to score such dominant performances in the first ever Canadian Shield Marathon Classic? Was it luck that the same pigeons for both Tom and Rick were repeat winners in the same year from two long distance marathons? I do not believe so. I believe that it is a case that blood does tell. These type of pigeons, these repeat winners from back to back extreme distances are the type of stuff that founded the Logans, the Barkers, the Gurnay, the Havenith, the Hansenne, the Bricoux, the Grooters, the deVriendt and the other fountainhead families. This proponent blood spawns the future winners at all distances and is what gives longevity to any family of birds be they sprint, middle, long distance, young bird or old bird racers. Believe it!!

Both Tom and Rick are long time long distance champions. More importantly, both are true gentlemen with a generous spirit and a willingness to give back to the sport. Both men are ready willing and able to help promote the sport in general and long distance old bird racing in particular. This has worked out very well for the rest of us. Incredibly, both men have offered to donate youngsters directly off their Pickle Lake winners to be sold at auction. This is a rare chance for the rest of us to capture proven long distance bloodlines just as the early strain makers did.

To make the pot all the sweeter, the mates Tom and Rick have chosen for these Pickle Lake champions – the sires of the donated birds - are champions in their own right. Also, just for good measure, Rick has donated a direct youngster off his 2006 Upper Canada National winner.

The following birds will be sold by auction on 18 November at vanDorf Hall during the seminar and award festivities with 100% of the proceeds to support the Canadian Shield Marathon Classic. Don’t miss this chance.

Three 2006 latebreds donated by Rick Jadowski

Rick’s 2006 Upper Canada National winner and both Pickle Lake birds are direct descendants of his 1993 National winner. Rick has won the OVC average speed the last 4 years. His family of pigeons have been kept intact for the past 30 years. Races like Pickle Lake (1301 km) provide him a much needed testing ground for his breeding program. I think he passed the test.
