Hi All
This year's Upper Canada National from Smooth Rock Falls is all set to go this Saturday. All administration including entries and results are being looked after at the Combine level this year so just sit back and enjoy the race. We hope to have an interim result posted before the end of next week.
Best of luck to everyone. May the sun be shining and the wind in their nose.

Hi Rob ; Ok for us as we won our club but it seems the best birds are in the ottawa area by word of mouth, way ahead of our area according to the sppeds I have heard.

I tried getting Voyo to work you over as to where you thought the winner was going to be from, Mike. Easily forecasted that Ottawa area was going to claim it. Mind you, without seeing the official results, there were some really good results put up by guys fighting the wind.
Way to go!!

It would seem that the Ottawa flyers just had their birds in better form and well motivated. The 40k North west wind was merely coincidental.

I wandered lonely as A cloud ..... then sat sometimes and looked Skywards.. often.
Now amazingly it has occurred to me that whereever and whenever I look skyward I have often noted pigeons in the sky, obviously flying etc.
Now it may be that as I have always had an interest in 'Pigeons' it is the reason why.
Now over here, don't know about other Vast Countries, but EVERY race day we see Pigeons flying, or racing over head EVERY week no matter where we are situated.
We watch and wait, and note, talk over the phone etc. and observe.
Dosen't this happen ever in Cananda even Some days? even Race Days?
I love also to watch my pigeons fly and circle around the house tops. or flit from roof top to roof top. I note also the difference in hieghts from day to day, the speeds etc. etc. Dosen't any one ever do this in Canada?
I note the much!

So do we canucks Roly, but, for me, race day is void of seeing racers flying through. Such is my location in this vast land.
| By Roly (62.253.32.7 - 62.253.32.7) on Tuesday, June 22, 2004 - 09:01 am: Edit |
Oh yes, that's a pity ... What a shame.
A shame really because then one can see first hand effects EVERY DAY the wind has on pigeons. Even circling arounf the loft tells most the effects it has, the hieght they fly,the change in speed as the swoop around and how the zip pretty nippy just to slow up to nigh a dead halt.
Possibly a reason why the effects of Wind is never an issue over here. just accepted fact.
I mean I advocated clubs should alway fly when possible a N. West direction for obvious reason. Now I see also that it is very possible in the breadth that Canucks fly to have a West in the wind and still favour the West side as it is still a following wind. But by and large. enough said on this issue I believe. lol

Peterl,
Even us Ottawa flyers admit the wind is one of the many factors that does affect the birds on race day, but it is not the only one, there must be at dozens of factors affecting a bird on race day: location, form, loft management, weather, health and conditioning, bird's own behavior, "motivation" technique used by the fancier, family/genetics, no basketing limit, no clocking limit thruout season, year after year. Each factor counts for a small percentage or more, after years of work it pays off. I bet the whole picture needs to come together to do well, if wind was so important all the Ottawa birds from 30+ lofts would have made it very well indeed, and this was certainly not the case...lol...there were only a handful of lofts that were flying well all year that did well in this race, I think but we will have to wait for the results.
I really enjoy these open races as this is a nice distance and lots of birds at the release.
Main thing is to have fun and continually test ones birds I think, to me I just look at my own loft as it doesn't make much sense to me to compare myself on raceday to someone 30, 60, or 300 miles or more away flying from the same release point...lol.
later,
Dave.

Very true DavidT. One thing for sure....if you don't have a bird in top condition and motivated - you will not be the winner! AND a bird in "SUPER FORM" can overcome many obstacles to win.
So our job is to best prepare our birds. Be ready if and when the conditions have less of an influence on the race.
| By Peterl (64.228.2.110 - 64.228.2.110) on Tuesday, June 22, 2004 - 11:42 am: Edit |
I agree Dave the real fun occurs at your own loft first. Many race days the only test I have is with the only loft that is as far west as mine..Mikev.has proven that a well prepared bird can overcome a less than favourable wind and deserves recognition..However it seems his effort will not be rewarded in the national results but the flyers on our side of the course know that he had a great race.Congratulations Mike!

Thanks Peter. There is no doubt that you and Louis were in just about the worst location on Saturday, short and west. I have not heard how you did, but considering everything, Louis had an outstanding pigeon. There were many outstanding performances and all only made possible by the Upper Canada national type format. With the help of WinWird and I hope Dave Tichborne, I am proposing five joint releases for next year under the auspicies of the Canadian National Flying Club. The dates and stations are as follows:
Jun 4, 2005 Matheson Yearling U.C. National
Jun 18, 2005 Smooth Rock Falls Traditional U.C. National
Jul 2, 2005 Moosonee Provincial
Jul 16, 2005 Longlac 600 Classic
Sep 17, 2005 Matheson Young bird National
The dates have been set well in advance so that any combine wishing to participate in any or all of these races can set their race schedules accordingly. Spread the word and see what the membership of the various combines want at the meetings this fall.

Hi MikeV What about the long and extremly west hard for them to, Dave i do agree with some of your post yes a good motivated bird can and will show it's true form more often than not, i did have some very good birds for the location i'm in and they where very keen to the nest one pair on 14 day eggs and the other on 8 day old baby they where 1-2-3-4 home, Mike your series is great but our problem is we only fly 2 of them, And congrat's on your great showing the week before also what was your final speed mine was 1787.???

Hi Bill
Great bird!! Yes the extreme long and west also had it tough but I would say not as tough as the short west in that wind. I hear Terry Wintle had one at 1760 m/m. That was truely an outstanding performance from one of the longest lofts in the race. We had it a little easier over here on the east side. I was flying 1790 m/m.
On the next year proposal, I realize that not all trailers go to all those point or on those dates. That is why I posted them early, so that they can be considered by each combine when they are drafting their 2005 race program.

Thanks for the feedback guys!
Keep up the efforts MikeV! Even more of those large combined releases would be great tests of the birds. Clubs/Combines can submit their results to the "Provincial/National" level if they so desire. You should add a few more races and maybe our combine would just fly "your" Old Bird schedule next year.
I will help this crew out if I have time, everyone was super fast getting the files to me for UCN, this past weekend. Even if I don't have the time, I should be able to make time too for something like this, as I like to be involved with keeners who tend to do more and participate, makes it more fun.
FOR OLD BIRDS, I don't see why almost ALL the races can't be combined releases, I would fly a combined release every week for OLD BIRDS if I could. Because young birds are crazy and still learning, generally teenagers in general, I think it is good to have a combined release or two only late in the YB season, after they have a few tosses/races under their belt.
I have most of the results in now, which is fantastic, but I had an email problem on my end so I need to get a re-send of a file from the Golden Triangle Club in my Combine, and we are still waiting on some montreal results, that I will have to type in later. I will try combining what I have and posting an Interim UCN '04 Result so you fellows can see. I don't see the results going "final" until some weeks later, until everyone is satisfied they are correct.

We know of Valley's. One here is the Nene Valley pronounced NEN as it really is . till so called scholars decided to add another 'E'. then Later call it NEEENNE... TWITS. Any way fine example the Trent Valley, then where Dave Allen flies to and the Great Valley hil side of Geof Toseland.
Pigeons love to fly the Vallies, Especially in Windy days. So the Valley Boys make names in ALL winds nearly. Hence why the bought in to that location. Some great 'Flyers' if birds in first drop to them, then it is litually Bye Bye to the rest, because they have brought JUST before the Curve and the winding bits.... others have lost time regardless. .. No wonder some have to pay OTHERS to fly in THEIR club lol.

Well it is a beautiful day to - day. Turned down some work as I wouldn't have been back in time.
Will RACE the last 5 weeks. 500 - 600 milers for every 2 year old or older. 450 to 500 for yearlings.
Seems I have nigh all my youngsters too. Had to fetch two back, and knew some went adrift. Knew some returned a day or few late. ... Now have to chech 'Ring Numbers to make sure they are all mine like. Will Race then - as of this moment - right through BOTH North and South.

Hi All
The interim results of the Upper Canada National are available for viewing at the Ottawa Valley combine home page. Check them out at http://ovc.pigeonplanet.com/
Congratulations to the overall winner against 191 lofts and 2559 birds, Louis Santoro. The entire OVC did a great job sweeping the first 60 positions. After that it became a free for all with birds clocking every few seconds from every point of the compass. Who could not cherish the opportunity to compete against the entire north course. Wow, what a race.

Four of the five combines have posted results so far for the Upper Canada National:
COC http://europaloft.ca/ 505 birds 33 lofts
NRRPA 972 birds 60 lofts
UNC 1031 Birds 79 lofts
EOC 515 birds 46 lofts
That's 218 lofts and 3023 birds which already exceeds last year's numbers without OVC results included. A record year. Congrats to all participants. This race is all about participation and the Ontario fanciers came through in real style. This might be the largest race in North America this year. A job well done!!!!!

Again it would appear one of the best kept secrets in Canadian Pigeon flying will score again in the Upper Canada National. I have flown against Rick Jadowski for 31 years and I must say he is one of the best pigeon fliers, I have ever met. Rick is a humble, classy, intelligent, competitive person, who has scored consistantly at the highest level in this Sport. Having seen the early reports, I am am sure he will score near the top of this years Upper Canada National.
I would like to congratulate him again for another great performance. One of the things that keeps me going in this sport is having people like Rick Jadowski, Oscar Devries, Richard Ridder, etc, who bring integrity to the Sport, but more importantly set the competition bar at a very high level.

Good competition makes others try harder I believe.
No competition make poorer fliers.
Just my thoughts..and Terry will agree with your list of members with integrity.
