Hi Myron

I am not sure which birds those are? I checked out the eyes of the 2nd and 3rd place birds at Rick Jadowski's and that description does not apply the them.

Unfortunately, not pictures of those birds. Maybe Oscar could get the pics for us?

By Mikev (74.115.199.6 - 74.115.199.6) on Tuesday, January 09, 2007 - 08:52 pm: Edit

Hi Myron

I am not sure. A friend of mine from over in Palm Beach County on the east coast will be breeding the birds for me to avoid all the hassles at the border. He has the same line of birds as me, Meulemans and 019 Janssens, plus a couple of other families. I was down at his loft last year and checked them out. Super pigeons and already acclaimated to Florida.

By Myron (64.12.116.6 - 64.12.116.6) on Tuesday, January 09, 2007 - 09:17 pm: Edit

OK MIKE,

I'M SURPRISED THAT YOU DIDN'T COME OVER THIS WAY LAST YEAR WHEN YOU WERE HERE TO CHECK THINGS OUT.

DID HE HAVE ANY BIRDS IN THE RACE LAST FALL.???

I do not believe so, but he did pretty well in the CBS Mercedes Classic.

I had an e-mail from the race secretary of the EOC regarding some good points for the Pickle Lake Race. I will post his e-mail and my response below.

Frank wrote:

Hi Mike

Last time we talked I mentioned a few things that we would need for the picle lake race. Here is a list of ideas and questions that I had.

1) require new gps readings

2) since race is open for 7 days need the sunrise/set for each day then the dark hours

3) what is the protection for day of race as eg eoc only gives 1/2 hour at sunset we should all use same what ever it is

4) if birds are clocked in dead time there should be no varition used and bird is put in at sunrise (if you use variation it moves bird in or out of dead time depending if clock is fast or slow

Thanks Frank

My response:

Hi Frank

We are going to go with last years GPS reading for the time being, but have the driver comfirm it when he releases the birds. I can almost guarantee it will change, so not much we can do on that one until race day.

Since it is an UNC sponsored race, the UNC sunset and sunrise times will be used. These are currently posted on the Oshawa website. I will get Joe to calculate the WinBird deadtime for each day and send it out to the combine race secretaries.

The deadtime provided by Joe will be based on 1/2 hour after sunset to one half hour before sunrise and of course all clubs will have to use the same deadtime.

I agree with your position on variation. It should be ignored if the bird is clocked during the deadtime and the bird scored as arriving at 1/2 hour before sunrise.

Thanks for the input. Great points!

Mike

Greetings all

158 Pickle Lake birds left Orillia at about mid-night last night. There were at least 18 more to be picked up in Sudbury for a total of 176. From what I understand there were some additional entries pending from North Bay as well. Congratulations to the COC and NRRPA for entering 47 pigeons all the way down to the bottom of the Niagara area. Those guys like the long races.

It looks like great weather for Sunday. Hold on to your hats.

Got this message from Chris Rowsell in Sudbury.

Mike, Charlie said the birds were up at 6:00 and with the wind we could see as fast results as you guys had yesterday!!!! He also said that you would be posting results on a web site could you please forward that site so I can follow the days progress..... THANKS! Tried to reach you on Thursday night and Friday morning for info on Pickle Lake for an interview I did Friday at 4:15 at CBC Radio. Talked to Tom Brouwer and got what I needed. Lot of fun and great promotion for our sport/race.... They thought that it may be our biggest race but I explained it was our longest.... Told them that the biggest was the SRF National the weekend before with last year seeing over 3600 birds the guys face almost hit the floor... May even be able to interview for that next year and put the word out there about the size and quality of that race?????

Thanks

Chris

Raining here but we got 5 birds so far. 4 to go.

A member from the OVC thought he would drive down and watch our EOC returns. It being such a beautiful day where he lives. LOL. He was sitting under the tarp, trying to hold his side down, with a lawn chair laying across his lap and not get wet when he spotted our first bird coming in. His nose and eyes were pink he was so wet. The bird, not the fancier. lol. As soon as there was a break in the clouds and the rain let up he headed home. lol. Good Luck All.

Just got a call from Wayne Davey in New Liskeard. He has clocked 4 of 10 shipped to Pickle Lake at a distance of 895.858 km. He got one at 8:00 p.m. A mated pair together at 8:25 p.m. and the hen that is the mate of the first bird at 8:35.

Congratualtion on some great birds Mr. Davey. A CU member since 1948.

Hi Mike and All,

Mr. AlexP and Mr. StephenH... sorry guys, I did not mean to give you heart problems. Actually, I was watching all day to hear one of you 2 might have gotten birds back... then I could pace mine using your times. lol. We did get 100% returns from 2 races in the EOC today, but Pickle Lake was not one of them.

Congratulations Mr. Davey!!! Any relation to WayneD of N.L?
But maybe I can use Mr. Davey's times from New Liskeard. We raced New Liskeard this weekend, so how long our birds took to do it, is still fresh in my memory. lol.

Meanwhile... I let my YBs out at 5:30 this morning...there was still heavy frost on the trees and car but I thought they could be done and not interfere when my Pickle Lake birds got home. It's past 11 o'clock now and other than landing twice for 10 minutes, most are still flying. Darn, Darn, Darn. The Best laid plans of mice and men... Doomed to failure... lol.

Chris said I don't need to worry... that by Friday when I do GET my 1st Pickle Lake bird... the YBS will be in. lol.

Hi Connie

Dave did not ship. My birds out thought the strategy for homing and had calcualted that it would be shorter to fly west. I figure they are just off the coast of Japan right about now and will soon be crossing the international date line. That will shave a day off their time. I wonder if WinBird can accomadate that calculation???

By Jimm (64.229.182.170 - 64.229.182.170) on Tuesday, July 03, 2007 - 01:49 pm: Edit

Mike..I have had a few of that breed this year..only to change their mind half way to China..and return home a few days late..maybe as you said they should have kept going and shaved a day offff their time..
Best of luck on all returns..

Chris Rowsell, the President of the Sudbury club, did an interview on CBC radio about the Pickle Lake race. Guess what? Mary Wells of Manitouwadge listened to the show. Monday a racing pigeon landed on her front lawn, 2004-CU-OSH-2439. She knew in an instant that it was a Pickle Lake bird. Sure enough, it was entered by Paul Bennett of Oshawa. She somehow tracked me down and phoned today. She is very excited about the race. She has the bird in a cage to protect it from the foxes. Manitouwadge is south east of Longlac and right on line with Pickle Lake. The bird quit 400 miles too soon lol.

Hi Mike,

You think it would be ok if I striked out pickle lake on Saturday at my club house? I would have two people sign it as well as myself. Then I could fax it to either Joe Martire or Voyo.

Hi Tony

A Saturday strike off is fine, but if you are using a mechanical clock, be sure it is not going to wind down and stop. As long as the flyer and two or more additional CU members are present, the clock can be read. I believe that Voyo is using the Hamilton Central race secretary to do the results. You will need to talk to Voyo.

Hi A,

I hold following Positions :

-the organizer/ chairman of the Canadian Racing Pigeon Union's "Fledgling
Racer Program",

-the Up North Combine's "Canadian Shield Marathon Classic" Organizer and
Publicity Chairman (I don't belong to this Combine but we work together as a
team, as it is Canada's Longest Pigeon race covering 6 different Combines),

-the Ottawa Valley Combine's secretary,

-the Golden Triangle Club's CU Award tabulator,

-the Golden Triangle Club's Yearbook secretary/ chairman,

-the Limestone City Flyer Club's CU Award tabulator,

-the Steacy Family Lofts manager (our 4 lofts have been said to be a pigeon
village). lol,

and last but not least, it has been said that

-I am the Eastern Ontario Combine's troublemaker. lol.

Gee, seeing them all listed like that makes me look greedy. And the hubby wonders why I have no time to do housework. lol.
