My club flies from the south to the north. Last year I trained from the south only. This year I moved and go to school about 50 miles away (to the east). I figured this would be great for training as I'm going out to 50 miles every day, however it is from the wrong direction. If I condition my birds from the east but give them a good toss say once a week from the south, do you think they will be fit to fly come race season? I'm only flying young birds this year.
Thanks
Termite

Termite it should work fine. But as you know if you read what I say, I am a believer in the rote, route conditiong of YBs on the line of flight for the races. By rote they learn the shortcuts and just may break out of the flock. If they do you may be minutes ahead for a win. Just my theory and you have already seen theories are as common as nasty AHs. Lets race. Bye BillyT

Mark, personally I don't believe it makes any difference what direction you train from. When I used to travel I used to take my birds wherever I happened to go on training day. I believe the birds will be more versatile. When I started training young birds I used to take them 10 miles (first toss) in all 4 directions and single-tossed them if I had time to do it. Very seldom lost any birds training them that way. If you have to make a special trip for training and direction of course is convenient it is normal to go direction of course but if you really want to sharpen the birds up you take them in the opposite direction before an important race and you would be surprised to see how well your birds come on race day. Just my opinion which worked very well for me.

I agree with Eastfield as you know.
Many have / do and their sucess is paramount.
Me I think - inregards of young birds - Up real early! 1/2 Hour after sunrise if poss, when the air is fressh and sweet and the sun has taken the nip out of it. 50 miles ... just right.
